It’s probably fair to say that most of us take Gmail for granted. We just type in our email and password during the Android setup and we are all set. But say things were not this easy… what if the email client does not automatically support Gmail?

Mailplane is the Mac desktop app that we use everyday to manage our Gmail inbox. We like it because it mimics all the features that you get on Gmail in the browser while providing a desktop app to manage your gmail separately from the (always cluttered) browser experience. You get access to all your Gmail settings such as labels, keyboard. The email client's sign-in method might be insecure. Try signing in directly on the Gmail app. Make sure your mail app isn't set to check for new email too frequently. In that case, you would have to set it up yourself. The way to do this is by manually entering the Gmail SMTP, or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, which will allow you to send emails via your Gmail account. The server address: smtp.gmail.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com
Security Type: TLS or SSL
Port: For TLS: 587; For SSL: 465
For the incoming settings, you will be following two routes: POP3 or IMAP. The difference between the two is that POP3 is really only a good choice when you are only checking your email from one device. The reason for this is that POP3 removes the email from the server when it retrieves it, making it impossible to receive the email on multiple devices. So granted that you probably use multiple devices, or at least want to prepare for the future, you should use IMAP.
Here are the settings:
Server Address: either pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com
Port: For POP3: 995; for IMAP: 993
If it asks for a security type, make it match the outgoing server.
And that is really all you need to know! Now you can send and receive Gmail’s from an email client as long as you can enter this information. Generally, the screen above can be found somewhere near an Advanced Settings page, or Server Settings; it varies.
