I have a mysterious HP printing problem.
Home: HP Photosmart All-in-one C3100, used infrequently. Many months ago, it started having problems (including the white stripes). Also, it chooses not to print some colors on pages, including black (choosing to print black cartridge only, it will selectively not print some of the text, but in other cases, only print blue and omit the black text for color printing). I've tried the utility and the cleaning, and changing the black ink, and get inconsistent printing. Sometimes it works, sometimes there is barely anything printed, and the printouts never have good quality, even after fiddling with the different settings on the printer and the software.

Home: old HP Deskjet930C, worked fine for some time (replaced only because the all-in-one was free), but when I pulled it out of the closet to use, it had empty lines. Calibration fixed that. But then it does the same problem with sometimes choosing to ignore a color as the printer above.

Work: HP Color LaserJet 2500. Within the last 6 months, it started giving us this problem of sometimes choosing to ignore a color, or not printing anything on a page, and then working (for all colors) randomly on another one.

In each case, I assumed the printer itself was at fault, but now I have 3 different HP printers with similar behavior which makes me wonder if the drivers are somehow at fault (fails on OSX 10.4 and 10.5). Or is this just more bad HP experience? In each case, I've tried the software based cleaning and calibration to no avail. In the work printer, we've had an expert come, clean it, and upgrade the firmware on the printer, but still, the same problem.
