Format Hard Drive For Mac and PC Overview of the Steps. You format your external hard drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system. You format your external hard drive to ExFAT. Then you can share the drive. You can go ahead without step 1. A Mac computer runs Apple's OS X operating system and comes with a variety of applications you can use to generate files that are saved to the hard drive, such as the TextEdit word processor or GarageBand, a program for making music. When you run Apple's native Disk Utility program, it displays the hard drive or drives mounted on the computer.
Disk Utility is a Mac OS X Snow Leopard feature that helps you perform maintenance chores on your Mac. You can use Disk Utility to see what data resides on the volumes or partitions you have on your computer. To find Disk Utility, open the Utilities folder within your Applications folder. When you first run this program, it displays all the physical disks and volumes on your system.
The Disk Utility application has its own toolbar that you can toggle on and off. Click the lozenge-shaped button in the upper-right corner of the window to display or hide the toolbar.
The volume tree structure on the left of the Disk Utility window lists both the physical disks and the partitions that you’ve set up. A single physical hard drive can contain several partitions. The information display at the bottom of the Disk Utility window contains data about both the volumes and the partitions on your hard drive.
In the example shown here, clicking the drive labeled 320.07 GB (the physical hard drive at the top of the tree) displays a description of the drive itself, including its total capacity, interface (connection type), and whether the drive is internal or external.
Clicking the tree entry for Wolfgang, however — the name of the partition created when the drive was formatted — displays information about the type of formatting, the total capacity of the partition and how much of that is used, and the number of files and folders stored on the partition.
- OS X, Windows, and Linux all use different hard drive formatting for normal system operations. A hard drive format refers to how the operating system stores the data on the drive. There are three common filesystems that are used today: HFS+, NTFS, and FAT32. Mac OS X uses HFS+, Windows uses NTFS and used to use FAT32.
- Jan 02, 2019 Maybe you just picked up a new external hard drive, DVD or CD device, server, or even memory stick to use with your Mac. Being able to see these external devices and their contents is obviously important. And the most convenient place to access them is in the Finder Sidebar.
Hi,
Mac Os Change Hard Drive Name
I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: 1 for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine)
The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name '1TB WD Elements 1023' with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as 'USB WD Elements 1023'. How do I change the name '1TB WD Elements 1023' to sometihng else? I can find it in finder and I can seem tofind any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elemets drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.
