Feb 13, 2018 I had this problem on mid-2011 Macbook Air. Black screen whenever I logged off of Guest Account. It began with the upgrade to High Sierra. I did the resets, OS restore, First Aid and did an internet restore per advice from Apple Support. My problem was solved by doing a clean install using procedure I found on IMore website. On Mac devices running an older version, users can select and hold shift, command, 3 to capture the entire screen and shift, command and 4 to capture a portion of the screen of their choice.
Your Mac was booting up and its now suddenly stuck on a black unresponsive screen.
This problem has happened to a countless number of Apple users and it can be a very frustrating situation especially if you use your Mac for productivity.
Why is my MacBook Screen Black?
The most common cause of this problem would be a software issue.
There’s most likely a bug in the MacBook operating system that’s stopping it from booting up normally – instead of booting up to your user account, it shows you an unresponsive black screen. Down below are a few methods you can use to fix this.
PRAM Reset your Mac to Remove Black Screen
The first and most reliable way you can try and fix this problem is by doing a PRAM reset.
PRAM stands for Parameter Random Access Memory and this is a type of memory in your MacBook that stores system settings.
Resetting the PRAM memory is one of the best ways to get rid of the black screen of death.
To reset the PRAM:
- Reboot your Mac and as soon as you hear the chime, hold down Command + Option + P + R keys
- The next time you hear the boot chime, the PRAM has been reset
- Wait for the Mac to boot up and the black screen should have gone
If resetting the PRAM memory didn’t do the trick, go to the next most reliable step.
Reset the System Management Controller
The next thing that you’ll need to do is to reset the SMC.
The system management controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the MacBook or MacBook Pro.
This chip is responsible for the power management of your Mac so resetting it may fix the black screen problem.
To reset the SMC:
- Shut down your mac and connect it to the charger
- Hold the Shift + Control + Option + Power button keys together for 5 seconds
- Let go of all the keys
- Your Mac should now boot up without the black screen
After you’ve tried both of the steps above, it’s pretty unlikely that you should be experiencing problems with your Mac.
If it’s still stuck on the black screen, go to the next step.
Sleep the Mac with a Keypress Sequence
The next thing you can do is to power on the Mac after putting it to sleep.
This is a little trick that can remove the black screen from your Mac if resetting the PRAM and SMC didn’t work.
To do this:
- Click on the power off button to bring up the dialogue box even though you can’t see it
- Click on S button which is a shortcut for sleep
- Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to force it off
- Wait for 15 seconds, hold the power button to turn it back on
After doing this step, you should be able to get rid of the black screen on your Mac.
If this step didn’t work, go to the next step.
Enter Password as Usual
The next step that I’ll advice you to take if the ones above haven’t worked is to enter your password as usual.
When you enter your password as if you could see the login screen, it could help your MacBook to boot up normally.
To do this:
- Enter your password as if the black screen wasn’t there
- Click enter
Once you entered your password, the black screen should have gone, and your Mac should boot up normally.
On rare occasions, you may be asked to reset your Apple ID password.
If so, reset it to what your Apple ID password was normally, and you should be good to go.

Before doing anything, you may want to make sure that you have a copy of your information to use if your Mac becomes unusable. So you may want to try backing up now before doing anything. Backing up may be possible even if your Mac does not boot. If you have already backups, then you may skip this step. You may be able to use OS X Recovery to backup your Mac.

How To Fix Mac White Screen Problem
Please check to see (by rebooting your Mac) if your issue is resolved after performing each step.
Disconnect everything
1-Shut down your Mac by holding down the power button. Disconnect all peripherals (printers, scanners, USB devices etc) that are plugged in to your Mac, except the mouse and keyboard. After disconnecting everything, try restarting your computer. If you Mac starts without any issue, this means that one of your accessories is causing this. Try to figure out the problematic peripheral(s) by reconnecting your accessories one at a time until your problem is fixed.
Safe Mode
2-If restarting your Mac with your peripherals disconnected does not work, try this step. Try Safe Mode (or safe boot) if you Mac does not turn on. Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode designed to fix macOS problems. Thus Safe Mode can be a useful troubleshooting method. Here is how you can start your computer in safe mode:
- Shut down your Mac and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Restart your Mac. And immediately, press and hold the Shift key as your computer restarts. You need to press the Shift key immediately after the startup sound/chime before the Apple logo appears.
- Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo or the login screen. Then log in, please note that you may have to log in a few times.
- Be patient because safe mode is slower. if you Mac starts up, restart your Mac normally without pressing any buttons. Do not press the Shift key when restarting.
Repair Disk
3-Try repairing your startup disk by opening Disk Utility from macOS Recovery. We are doing this because it is possible that the disk may be corrupted. Please follow these steps:
- Turn off your Mac.
- Restart your Mac and hold option+R keys immediately after the Apple startup chime. Keep holding the buttons until you see the Apple logo.
- When your computer starts up, you will see the “macOS Utilities” window.
- Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
- Select your startup disk (by default, it’s called Macintosh HD, unless you renamed it).
- Click The First Aid icon and then click the Run button. Disk Utility will now try to find and repair any problems.
- When you are done, then reboot your Mac.

Reset PRAM or NVRAM
4-You may want to reset “non-volatile random-access memory” or NVRAM (this is also called PRAM). Follow these steps:
- Turn off your Mac.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Turn on your Mac.
- Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys together immediately after the startup sound.
- Your computer will restart (keep holding the keys)
- Release the keys when you hear the second startup sound. This process will reset NVRAM.

5-Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) may fix your problem. Here is how:
Follow these steps if you have a modern Mac notebook (like MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) without a removable battery:
- Turn off your computer.
- Connect the power adapter.
- Press the Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Then release all the keys at the same time.
- Reboot your computer.

Follow these steps if you have an older Mac notebook with removable battery:
- Turn off your computer.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Remove the battery.
- Hold the Power Key for five (5) seconds, then release the power button.

Reinstall macOS
6–Reinstalling macOS may fix this and you may use macOS Recovery to do this. Here is how:
- Shut down your Mac. You will need to restart your Mac from macOS Recovery. There are a few options you may choose. Here are the startup options:
- Restart your Mac and immediately, press and hold the Command-R keys until you see a spinning globe: This option will reinstall the latest macOS that was on your Mac. We recommend this option. This will reinstall the macOS version that is stored on your Mac.
- Restart your Mac and immediately, press and hold the Option-Command-R keys until a spinning globe appears: This will upgrade to the latest macOS.
- Restart your Mac and immediately, press and hold the Shift-Option-Command-R keys until you see a spinning globe: This will reinstall the macOS that came with your Mac when it was bought.
